Cristoforetti became the European astronaut who spent the most time in space at a time with this mission.
Cristoforetti will go to the International Space Station again in the spring of 2022, according to the statement made by the European Space Agency (ESA) today.
Speaking at the press conference of ESA today, Samantha Cristoforetti said that she was honored to be going to the Space Station once again, which she described as “my second home” and said, “This was my biggest desire.”
Will stay in space for 6 months
It has been announced that Cristoforetti will go to the space mission in 2022 in a private commercial spacecraft and will stay in space for about 6 months.
Samantha Cristoforetti’s mission next year is to conduct experiments on human physiology and biology, as well as experiments on the use of 3D metal printers in space.
Details of Cristoforetti’s new mission are expected to be announced later.
While explaining Cristoforetti’s new mission, ESA Managing Director Josef Aschbacher also touched on the new astronaut recruitment plans that ESA announced last month.
“Samantha sets a great example for anyone who wants to run for the recently announced ESA astronaut elections,” Aschbacher said.
The European Space Agency announced last month that they would buy a new astronaut for the first time in 11 years. Cristoforetti was among the astronauts selected for the 2008-2009 period in the Agency’s last applications.
