Istanbul’s first earthquake-tsunami observation station, which was established in cooperation with Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and Büyükçekmece Municipality, was opened in Büyükçekmece as part of risk reduction studies in the Marmara Region.

Speaking at the program organized for the opening of the earthquake-tsunami observation station established in Büyükçekmece Marina Marina, Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Director Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener stated that Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute carries out instant earthquake observations with earthquake stations spread all over Turkey and carries out tsunami warning duty in the Aegean, Mediterranean, Black Sea and related seas within the framework of its international responsibility.

Stating that they support not only Turkey but also neighboring countries in this regard, Prof. Dr. Özener said, “The importance of the station that we will open now is the first station to be established in Istanbul with multi-parameters. Both seismic earthquake observations, meteorological observations and sea level observations will be made in this station. In the next step, we will install GPS at this station very soon. “We will have the opportunity to instantly monitor the movements of the earth’s crust with the station. Therefore, an important step for our efforts to reduce earthquake damage is the station we are opening at the moment. This will have very different secondary effects. Like these stations, we also established stations in Tuzla and Kumbağ. Today we will also open our station in Kumbağ.” he said.

Explaining that they were able to determine the location of the earthquake at the earthquake stations in 30 seconds, Prof. Dr. Özener said, “The feature of the tsunami stations is by observing the sea level changes and different parameters at these stations, as you know, the most important risk awaiting us as a secondary effect in a possible Marmara earthquake is a tsunami. We have seen examples of this in Bodrum after the earthquake in Kos, and in Bodrum after the Seferihisar earthquake. In a possible Marmara earthquake, there may be a tsunami, not due to the nature of the fault, but after the landslide that will occur on the sea floor.Our goal with these established stations will be to give the tsunami warning message within 5-7 minutes, thus preventing the loss of life and property that may occur after the earthquake. ” used the phrases.

Feature of the station

Büyükçekmece Earthquake-Tsunami Observation Station was established within the scope of risk reduction studies in the Marmara Region before the earthquake.

This multi-disciplinary measurement station is the first and only station with this feature in Istanbul. Thanks to the sensors inside, it will provide a healthier data assessment of the earthquake, measuring the change in water level, and providing tsunami early warning information in a time frame of approximately 5-7 minutes in a tsunami that may occur after an earthquake. With its meteorological measurements, it will contribute to the correct evaluation of all parameters and to the agricultural activities of the farmers in the region.
