One of the scientists “When will I die?” The online calculator attack that answers the question has arrived. Scientists have developed an online calculator that estimates how much longer people aged 50 and over can live.
Continuing their work at the University of Ottawa in Canada, the team claimed that the calculator they prepared could accurately predict deaths within 6 months. The research team used data from more than 491,000 elderly people who received home care services between 2007 and 2013. According to EurekAlert, the calculator was tested on a group of seniors in the province of Ontario.
Experts said that the calculator called Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder-Life in the Community Tool (RESPECT) focuses on people who are expected to die within the next 5 years.
Persons wishing to use RESPECT must answer questions about illness and their ability to perform daily activities such as eating. After that, the website reports the estimated life expectancy and the risk of death within 5 years.
Amy Hsu, lead author of the paper on the calculator, said RESPECT enables families to plan with loved ones: “For example, it can enable an adult child to plan when to take time off from work to be with their parents.”
From the research team, Dr. Peter Tanuseputro also said that thanks to RESPECT, the quality of life of someone who is learned that he is approaching the last moments of his life can be improved. The Independent
