New Zealand to spend 247 million dollars for Antarctica

Finance Minister Grant Robertson submitted to parliament the new fiscal year budget draft, which includes the spending plan for the reconstruction of the base.

The bill stated that $ 247 million would be spent for the reconstruction of the base, which was established in 1957 and is an important hub for international research activities in Antarctica.

Within the scope of the project, 12 additional buildings built in the 1980s will be demolished and 3 interconnected modern facilities will be built. The first of the facilities will be used for science tasks, the second for engineering tasks and storage, and the third for food and accommodation.

When the facility is completed, it will reach the capacity to host 100 people at the same time.

New Zealand has long been an important stop for exploration and research activities in the ice continent due to its geographical proximity to Antarctica.
