With the Fiber Optic Based Acoustic Sensor System (FOTAS) implemented by Turkish engineers, fiber optic cables that provide data transfer can be used in the environmental safety of critical facilities.
Fiber optic cables buried underground within the scope of the domestic system developed are transformed into acoustic sensors. These sensors ensure that mechanical movements occurring at any point on the line are detected acoustically.
Thanks to its deep learning artificial intelligence, the system can distinguish movements that occur from among 150,000 tags classified as climbing, running, and digging. Thus, it offers the opportunity to locate the threat with a 10-meter location accuracy.
Integrated with CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) cameras, the system can quickly connect to the camera in the relevant area in case of an alarm.
Distributed fiber optic sensors can be used for security in many areas such as airports, railways, energy facilities, oil refineries, buried oil and gas pipeline systems.
The security system established in Çamlıca Television and Radio Tower and Information Valley detects all kinds of third party interventions such as unauthorized crossing attempts and unauthorized excavation along the route of the line.

SAMM Technology General Manager Mustafa Akşit told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they started the FOTAS Project in 2017 with the TÜBİTAK Information and Information Security Advanced Technologies Research Center (BİLGEM) and the system they brought as a product was launched in 2020.
Stating that the product they developed is an acoustic detection system, Akşit noted that fiber optic cables perceive the acoustic effect created by physical movements around the place they pass and give an alarm.
Stating that this system is generally used in industrial and nuclear facilities and airports, Aksit said, “Fiber optic cables are laid around these areas. When someone climbs the fence, excavation is done or the vehicle passes, the system detects this and gives an alarm.” said.

Akşit gave the information that they have developed two different models that can detect up to 10 and 50 kilometers at the moment, and that the product is 100 percent local and all its components are designed and produced here.
Akşit stated that they formed a team for signal labeling and collected data from the field and added that they have collected 150 thousand data from the field such as walking, excavation, vehicle passage so far.
